FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Employment Type: Full-Time
Schedule: Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM. No nights, weekends, or on-call.
Position Purpose
The Registered Nurse provides safe, compassionate, evidence-based nursing care for adults and adolescents receiving mental health and substance use services. You protect medical stability, support medication success, and educate patients so they can manage their health with confidence. At Citizens Behavioral Health, nursing is patient-first care delivered with empathy and dignity.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Clinical Assessment: Complete RN nursing assessments within 24 hours of admission and at required intervals per 10A NCAC 27G.0205. Monitor vital signs, BMI, blood pressure, glucose, and psychotropic medication side effects.
- Medication Services: Administer medications and IM injections per provider orders. Perform medication reconciliation, provide teach-back education on psychotropic medications, and monitor adherence, effectiveness, and adverse reactions.
- Documentation: Maintain timely and accurate documentation in the EHR. Complete nursing notes, quarterly summaries, MAR reviews, and discharge summaries in compliance with NC DHSR and Alliance Health standards.
- Treatment Planning: Participate in weekly Person-Centered Plan meetings with LP, QP, CTRS, and Peer Support staff. Provide nursing recommendations for treatment goals, interventions, and discharge planning.
- Health Education: Facilitate group and one-on-one education sessions covering wellness, nutrition, chronic disease management, medication adherence, smoking cessation, and anxiety management.
- Crisis & Safety: Assess and help de-escalate behavioral and medical crises during clinic hours. Follow CIT and safety protocols while coordinating with EMS, emergency departments, or primary care providers when necessary.
- Compliance: Follow infection control procedures, CLIA-waived testing protocols, medication storage and disposal guidelines, and HIPAA requirements. Maintain all required nursing licenses, CPR certification, and mandatory training.
- Care Coordination: Communicate with primary care providers, pharmacies, hospitals, and community resources to support comprehensive, patient-centered care.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education/License: Graduate of an accredited Registered Nurse program. Active, unrestricted North Carolina RN license or multi-state compact license.
- Experience: Two or more years of RN experience preferred. Previous experience in psychiatric, behavioral health, or substance use treatment is strongly preferred. New graduates with strong psychiatric clinical rotations will also be considered.
- Certifications: Current BLS/CPR certification. CPI or de-escalation training completed within 90 days of hire.
- Skills: Strong psychiatric assessment, IM injection administration, motivational interviewing, trauma-informed care, EHR documentation, and professional communication skills. Must demonstrate compassion, patience, and respect for every patient.
Physical & Work Environment
Clinic-based outpatient setting in Raleigh. Ability to sit or stand for 8-hour shifts, lift up to 25 pounds, and respond quickly during a crisis. Occasional community outings with staff may be required.

Benefits: Medical, dental, and vision insurance after 60 days, 15 days of paid time off (PTO), 7 paid holidays, CEU reimbursement, malpractice insurance coverage, RN-BC certification support, and a consistent Monday through Friday schedule from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM with no weekends or on-call responsibilities.
